Yearbook Review- John Diaz

My role in the yearbook was the art designer, it was a role that did require quite a bunch of hard work but regardless of that I think I was able to do my job quite well. My other group members were Bryant, the editor and Rory, the photographer. I can't say that we used our resources to the fullest extent, this is because we were able to use our own images but we should of been more attentive with using images taken by other because as far as we knew, we could use images taken by others. Rory was in charge making graphics and taking pictures, I can honestly say he was good at that, however I wish me and Bryant could of taken pictures ourselves so Rory could focus more on his pages. Bryant did a pretty fair job, however I do feel he was falling behind is his job, if anything I did the most amount of pages but his spread was rather unique.

Newsletters review- John D

Group 1 review

The content in Bryant's newsletter is somewhat really good. I like how he used his own images and how he mentioned Alpha Centauri, the main idea of my article. I can say however that there were a few spelling and grammar mistakes like the words regents was spelled wrong. He did use a color and font for the text that was easy to read so that is a plus on his part. The graphic elements were really well displayed but there is a lot of empty space so that's something that could of been fixed.  The lay out of the page was nice despite no use of columns. The titles and headers were very nice but like I said, could of used more images and if not at least fill up the empty space.  Overall the newsletter does seem consistent but could have more graphics to make it more attention grabbing.

Group 2 review

Well James did indeed choose a layout that is not similar  to most newsletters that I have seen. There is a lot and I mean a lot of text, but where it says "insert picture" Was he asking or doing? Nonetheless the blue background is nice and the phrase : "Find out what's new in your school" actually caught my attention  As far as I know there are no titles and only one header at the top. Its hard to know if there's even a story to the whole newsletter. The text is somewhat readable just because cursive isn't used in newsletters or in any article these days. There is no page #'s so that's something else that's confusing.  Overall the flow was not that good, there could of been way more improvement but it seems there was effort put into the content which as good.

Group 3 review

I can say that Giselle's page is the one that stood out to me the most.  What she wrote really appealed to me in the way that most people wouldn't bother to interview a school nurse.  She used pull quotes, continuation lines. There were plenty of graphics and/or images all over the page and the text was nice and big enough to read clearly. The font was nice and the colors were a good choice as well as the 3 column use that was portrayed greatly. Overall it was really nice, some grammar mistakes stood out in areas that they shouldn't of but other that that nothing major.

Group 4 review

Demetri's page was really nice and the choice of background was really futuristic. The font was nice, he used his own images which was pretty cool. The text was clear to read and the pull quotes I think really promoted what he was trying to get at. I did see 3 columns though however its really compressed. It was a unique layout and could of used more graphics but other than that it was really good. The overall flow gives me the impression that he really worked hard on this especially considering all the images are his.

Group 5 review

Royan seems like the school food judging by the fact that he promotes the food as something yummy and edible. The images look really well and the fact that he went out of his way to get the images of the pizza and the salad bar There are quite a few of grammar mistakes but its nothing that the reader wouldn't eventually be able to figure out The text is easy to read and there are 3 columns. The overall flow is catchy and well portrayed.

Group 6 review

Saad's page was really interesting, he decided to write about movies, but that wasn't exactly what caught my eye.  There were quite a few grammar and spelling mistakes like " Curtsy" to disneyandmore.blogspot. Besides this the font was readable though he could of added color to the background. There is plenty of content but not really any use of graphics,  three columns were used but no pull quotes . Overall flow was sufficient but again could of been constructed more smoothly.

Group 7 review

Katherine did an amazing job on her page, her images were well chosen and the diversity was well shown. There was a lot of content as well as no spelling mistakes on her favor. I saw 3 columns with text that was easy to read, the pull quotes were in bold which I feel is really important in any newsletter to make things stand out. With her page numbers the overall flow is spectacular especially how the banner matches with that of the other pages of the newsletter.

Group 8 review

Michelle's page had an interesting topic which wasn't quite something brought up a lot when talking about science but still really good. She did write a lot of text but there was also a lot of empty space where there could of been more content.  She added one image and it was attention grabbing but there could of been more examples to appeal to the topic. The text was easy to read besides the fact that quite a few words were cut off because she didn't to use 3 columns or at least organize her text more efficiently. No pull quotes but the overall flow seems well written but could of been planned more efficiently in some areas

Group 9 review

Adriana's page was really well built, the letters were really big but the header just looks really good. She could of used more than one image but it was centered so that made it the newsletter look good regardless. She made more than one article about different topics and I don't think that s something that other groups did or managed to do. The pull quotes were nice and very clear,  I admired more things about her page but the list would just go on and on. Overall the flow was consistent but there's  always room for more improvement

Group 10 review

Paul's question as a title brings a very good point that I feel many staff and students would care to talk about and be involved in.  The black hawk isn't necessarily black and when its compressed it really isn't as graceful as a bird should be.  The font is nice but if "The Blues" is going to be the header than it should be at the top not the title. There are no images besides the bird and even though its hard to work with the topic he chose he still probably could of took images of the staff od the school. There are only two columns but the overall flow is average at best since the point of the article is made somewhat clear.

Newsletter Project Reflection Blog- Group 8- John D

In this Project I worked along side my two group mates Malaysia and Michelle. Our assigned topic for our newsletter was Science, not usually a topic people tend to focus when writing a newsletter. I can say that despite such a hard topic to work with we were able negotiate who would do what. My section would consist of Astrology, Malaysia went with weather and anything to do with natural disasters. As for Michelle he section, as was her decision was human development. We decided to follow a similar format of a light blue color as the background as well as black as the typical text font.
As for the name of the Newsletter we decided to name ourselves "Black Hawk Explorers" with its own design to it. We decided to put the title "Black Hawk explorers" on every page at the top as the title. As for headers we had out own titles for our sections for example mine was: "Next Stop, Alpha Centauri". Basically its about how scientists have found a sort of star which contains the same ozone layer and atmosphere as earth so if the earth gets over populated in the future. Michelle's was about how dogs can support baby's into developing better, it's as if their presence is something special. We did use continuation lines  as well as dates and page #'s my page # was 2, Michelle's was 1 and Malaysia's was 3. Of course we used our images. I personally wasn't able to put my own image of Alpha Centauri since that logically isn't possible with some one of my experience so I was however able to cite the images I used from their original source.

Brochure Idea Hw- John, Joseph and Demetri

For this assignment, me Joseph and Demetri have decided to do a brochure on American Eagle. We feel the brochure is needed for American Eagle because with the competing companies like Gap and Hollister American Eagle would be able to reach more individuals and appeal to others besides us.  For the first panel in other words the cover we plan to apply to use the skills we learned from the Quinoa advertisement so we can form a slogan, present complementary and supplementary and most importantly catch people's attention.  As for our plans for the second, third and fourth panels we plan to spread a variety of images of the products people would be able to buy, we won't precisely include prices however we do plan to include separate sections so that so that three are products that appeal to women, men and kids and young adults of all ages. Each section title will have a title style that appeals to what section it is or, for example for the young boys section it will probably include a soccer ball in place for the letter O in the word boys. As for graphics and images we can divide the search for those evenly. The fifth panel will be special considering that it will be dealing with the endorsements of the product, we will include a questionable yet alluring endorsement which will forge curiosity in the minds of the people who are considering shopping at American Eagle. Lastly, the 6th panel will include dialogue that will give the people a final decision after viewing what American Eagle, we plan to form a statement surrounded by informing graphics that will gravely influences the brochures influence.

We plan to separate the work evenly since its three of us and there are 6 panels. I will do the cover for the brochure since we feel in the brochure should provide realism and persuasion in the front and I can provide that. Demetri can work on panel five since he seems to have a strength in promotions, endorsements and testimonials if necessary. Joseph's strength seems to be that he knows what people should be hearing as well as what they want to hear so in this case since this a brochure he seems to be the right fit for panel six. As for panels two, three and four we will decide to divide that evenly since we are a group of three, each of us gets a panel that appeals to our strengths as well as get a panel that contributes to the main content of the brochure, thus each member completing 2 slides.

Project 4 Advertisement Reflection Blog

In this Project my goal was to create an advertisement  for a Bolivian grain called Quinoa. I was to use to all the skills I learned in indesign and photo shop to make an advertisement with my assigned group which my client would like to take on. As for Quinoa, it is a grain made in Boliva that has more protein than a piece of steak and can be prepared in a variety ways, like cereal for example. The client told us that in order for us to proceed with the advertisement we would have to appeal to things that go with everyday life and really shows that Quinoa is a very healthy grain that can offer more protein than steak. For the comp I made the title: Don Cordero's Quinoa and with it I included the colors of the Bolivian flag which consisted of red yellow and green. Also I included a sunset background to catch and beautiful soothing  background for the grain, I also added a sufficient amount of the plant to present in the advertisement. The reaction at first was that the client felt like I could of added something to make the grain more ancient, like it has been around for awhile, and that I did.

The changes I made to my advertisement were quite simple, I removed a few layers to make the advertisement more simple and then I added an Aztec/Mayan design to the advertisement to add an ancient effect. I utilized members in my group for this project by exchanging ideas via email and in class conversations so we could work together to meet the clients requirements. From the finished results I saw that my work came out pretty good, it wasn't perfect but I'm really proud of it and the fact that I now have experience in this area truly is an honor.
